                          The 80th Energy Forum: Reflections on the Transformation and Industrialization of Scientific Research Achievements of Photovoltaic Module Coatings

                                  The 80th Energy Forum was held at the College of Energy at Hemu building A203 at 14:30 pm on November 19th, Dr. Wang Yuanhao, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, an expert of the National Central Organization Department gave an impressive lecture. The theme of the forum is Reflections on the Transformation and Industrialization of Scientific Research Achievements of Photovoltaic Module.



                                  Dr. Wang Yuanhao gave the speech from three aspects: personal education and work experience, self-cleaning coatings for photovoltaic glass, personal innovation and entrepreneurial experience and thinking. First of all, Professor Wang Yuanhao briefly introduced his educational and research experience, including his research direction and some achievements in recent years.

                                  Next, Dr. Wang Yuanhao explained the key points of self-cleaning coatings for photovoltaic glass. At present, there was a problem that dust had a great influence on glass in the solar power generation industry. The cleaning risk was large and the cost was high, which directly affected the income of photovoltaic power generation enterprises. After investigation of severe dust areas, it turned out that solar energy output was reduced by the dust. The effect reached about 30%, which made self-cleaning coatings of great important. Dr. Wang then explained several specific methods. The first was the electrostatic dust removal method (short-distance electrode) for the surface ash removal of satellite photovoltaic modules. Due to the high cost and voltage, it was mainly limited to cameras. After that, it was the dust removal method for civil photovoltaics. Dr. Wang proposed two models of lotus leaf and pitcher plant, namely superhydrophobic material and super hydrophilic material. The superhydrophobic material mainly relied on a certain surface roughness and hydrophobicity , which made the water droplets roll off and took away the dust; the super hydrophilic material had two methods of dust removal, one of which relied on the water film to infiltrate to the bottom of the dust, and the other method was the decomposition of oil, using materials containing TiO2 commonly. The application of this type of material can provide about 5% efficiency.


                                  Dr. Wang also answered some questions. For example, whether self-cleaning equaled non-ashing, Dr. Wang pointed out that self-cleaning meant that by improving the coating, the dust on the surface could be removed by natural conditions, which could achieve the effect of cheap ash removal.  Another typical question was where the resistance of PV self-cleaning coatings came from. Dr. Wang answered it from different angles: it’s mainly because the cost was not low enough, the manufacturers were not able to improve the power and the gains were not obvious enough.


                                  At last, Dr. Wang introduced his own experience in innovation and entrepreneurship and shared his own views on the entrepreneurship of university teachers and researchers. After Dr. Wang had a lively exchange discussion with the teachers and students, the forum was successfully concluded.
